Abegail Galias, or known as Abby, moved from the Philippines to New Zealand in search of a better future. Having grown up in a culture where hospitality is second nature, pursuing a career in the field felt like a natural fit.

“As a Filipino, I enjoy helping people feel welcome and comfortable. Studying hospitality in New Zealand allowed me to grow and work with people from different cultures,” she says.

Abby chose Skills Ignite for its hands-on learning, supportive tutors, and real-world training. As an international student, she was looking for more than just theory – she wanted practical skills and meaningful experience, and she found both.

From campus events to working at a major boxing event, Abby built her confidence through real-life learning. A standout moment was winning silver medals in barista skills, classic cocktails, and table settings at the first-ever Skills Ignite Hospitality Competition.

Adjusting to a new country, language and lifestyle wasn’t always easy, especially being far from home. But with encouragement from her tutors and classmates, Abby found a sense of belonging in her Hospitality team and grew into a more confident and resilient version of herself.

Now proudly working at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland, Abby is focused on building her career and supporting other international students entering the industry.

Her advice for future Skills Ignite students?

“Take every chance to get hands-on experience and build strong relationships with your tutors and classmates. Their support will help you grow.”
