On July 19th, our Skills Ignite campus came together to celebrate the Māori New Year – Manawatia a Matariki!
Matariki, marked by the rising of the Matariki star cluster, is a significant time in Aotearoa, offering space to reflect on the past year, celebrate the present, and set intentions for the future. It’s a time to gather with whānau, friends, and community – something we at Skills Ignite believe in deeply.
The celebration was a true reflection of those values of remembrance, celebration and hope for the future, and bringing our community together from diverse backgrounds, uniting use in a shared appreciation of te ao Māori and the importance of culture.
Students took centre stage with incredible performances and talents that celebrated Māori culture, language and traditions. From waiata and dances, their energy and pride were infectious – reminding us of the richness and beauty of our community.
Delicious kai was also prepared by our amazing Cookery students where fusion dishes of traditional Māori dishes and Kiwi classics, and other cultural dishes were delivered with care and skills. The perfect way to honour Matariki together!
At Skills Ignite, we’re more than a place of learning, we’re a community. Events like our Matariki celebration highlight the importance of inclusiveness, respect, and cultural pride. They remind us that success isn’t just measured by qualifications but also by the connections we foster and the values we carry with us.
Matariki also aligns beautifully with the journey of many of our students, reflecting on challenges overcome, celebrating achievements, and setting new goals for the future. It’s a powerful reminder that every ending brings new beginnings, and together, we can navigate the year ahead with hope and determination.
