Information Technology (IT) professionals help keep modern businesses, systems and services running. From supporting computer networks to creating websites, managing databases and protecting digital information, they play a vital role across every industry.

The IT sector is one of the fastest-growing industries in New Zealand and around the world. In Aotearoa, over 100,000 people work in digital technology roles, contributing nearly $7 billion to the economy each year. Globally, the tech industry continues to expand, with rapid developments in cloud computing, cybersecurity, AI and data science driving demand for skilled workers.

What makes a great IT support professional?

While many people come to IT with a natural curiosity about computers, formal training is becoming increasingly important. As businesses become more digital, they need people with both technical skills and the ability to work with users and clients.

Some key traits include:

  • Logical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • A passion for technology and learning
  • The ability to work independently and troubleshoot effectively
  • Familiarity with operating systems, hardware and software
  • Willingness to adapt in a constantly evolving environment

In New Zealand, employers regularly list vacancies for roles such as helpdesk technician, IT support, technical administrator and junior systems analyst. These roles exist across nearly every sector – from education and government to healthcare, finance, retail and logistics.

Once you gain experience, you can move into higher-level roles such as:

  • Network or Systems Administrator
  • Cybersecurity Analyst
  • Cloud Support Technician
  • Software Tester
  • Junior Developer or Web Developer

With the right foundation and a commitment to learning, your IT Essentials qualification can be the launchpad to a stable, future-proof and globally relevant career.
